Senior Linux Engineer at The Hut Group

We have opportunities in Operations roles focussing on automation, public/private cloud, service engineering, and core Linux engineering.


The Senior Linux Engineer is a key member of the infrastructure team; which is responsible for operation and maintenance of the group ecommerce platform and test/development environments.

The role would be ideally suited to someone who is already an established Senior Linux Engineer with experience in a similar role.

Previous experience in an ecommerce or web company would be advantageous but not essential.

Experience building and maintaining infrastructure platform services would be advantageous.

This role requires a solid Linux background and the ability to work under your own initiative. You will need to be able to analyse the estate and propose ways of streamlining processes and making improvements.

You will need to be a versatile individual willing to investigate new technologies and keep up to date with the technology sector.

This role requires the ability to manage workload between BAU and project work.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring availability of the group platform and services.
  • Provide day to day support to the business adhering to SLAs.
  • Mentor other members in the department to transfer knowledge and key skills.
  • Provide On-call support out of hours.
  • Key Skills and Experience:

  • Solid understanding of Linux Operating Systems (CentOS or similar)
  • Scripting Languages (e.g. Python, Perl, Bash, Javascript, Go)
  • Experience with automation and/or configuration/orchestration tools advantageous
  • Good understanding of Network principles
  • Excellent Verbal and written communication skills
  • Good understanding of Computer and network security principles
  • Experience within eCommerce advantageous
  • Good project management skills

  • Configuration, Software, and Patch Management tools (e.g. Chef/Puppet, Ansible, Spacewalk/Satellite

  • Message queueing and Pub/Sub (e.g. ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ, Redis)
  • Authentication Control / Secret Management mechanisms (e.g. Hashicorp Vault
  • Virtualisation Environments (e.g. VMware, Xen, KVM, OpenStack)
  • Monitoring (e.g. Nagios, AppDynamics, New Relic)
  • Deployment pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, Go)
