What’s the role all about?

Cleo’s an AI assistant that helps over 1.7m people across the UK, US and Canada feel better about their money. Supportive but wry, engaging and relatable, Cleo talks to you like a real person, helping you get to grips with your spending. Along with smart updates, she can set you a budget, put savings away for you, keep you out of your overdraft, and much more.

We’re a fast-growing startup, backed by the founders of Skype, Transferwise and Zoopla. In the past 2 years we’ve scaled the team from 6 to 40, launched in North America, closed a $10m Series A led by Balderton Capital, and grown to over 1.7m users. We’re building a world-leading team as we grow, driving us toward 10 million users over the coming 12-18 months. Watch this to dive a little deeper.

We’re looking for a talented and experienced writer to build out Cleo’s stand-out personality, and take the lead in developing the most distinctive AI product voice worldwide.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Writing conversational copy for an AI that speaks to 1.7 million users 

  • Developing the voice of the product across a growing range of features, in both conversational interface and app screens

  • Working closely with a super smart product team to ideate, write up, and test copy in all areas of the product

  • Working with UX and user research to speak to users, identify their problems, and write with solutions in mind

  • Taking the lead in creating the most distinctive conversational voice in the space, growing that voice across the UK and US and new geographies

What do we look for?

  • Incredibly strong writing experience, and evidence of the ability to distill conversations succinctly and clearly

  • Experience in conversational writing. Doesn’t have to be in conversational AI - screenwriting, writing for theatre, writing dialogue extensively, all count

  • An exceptional portfolio of writing, whether for tech products or otherwise

  • Sharp, witty, up to date on cultural references, and interested in writing a highly relevant cultural product

  • A proven ability to write for US audiences (the majority of our users are American)

How long will all this take?

We aim to move as fast as possible, usually 2 weeks is enough time for us all to get to know each other

  1. Send over your portfolio to be reviewed by a member of the UX/writing team

  2. Quick phone call with a member of our team to find out more about your experience and why you want to work at Cleo

  3. Brief take home test to assess your style and experience

  4. Onsite interview

    1. Talk through portfolio and the take home task, plus a more general interview chat with the product team

    2. Meet some of the wider team to talk culture
