ROLI is looking for a R&D Mechatronics Engineer with proven academic and/or commercial project experience to join our Research team. 
As our R&D Mechatronics Engineer, you will design and build advanced testing systems to gain quantitative insights into the critical performance of ROLI’s core sensor technologies and hardware products. 

We’re looking for someone who understands that designing and adopting the correct scientific methodologies is just as important as the data you are trying to acquire. You will be familiar with flow-based programming and automated data-acquisition, and have a keen desire to learn our existing test equipment and devise new ones. 

The ROLI Research team is made up of a hardware engineering and a hardware quality team. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Research Team, but will have many opportunities to work cross-disciplinarily with other teams on interesting new concepts and projects.
This is a unique opportunity to be a part of a disruptive category of music making devices we are creating called ‘Connected Music’ - a network of hardware and software, platform and developer products that will revolutionise how music is made.

What you’ll do:
  • Design and conduct scientific tests to acquire quantitative insights into key performance criterias of hardware products/technologies
  • Produce clear reports, providing insight to the Engineering and Operation teams
  • Help the Product team translate user/market insights into quantitatively qualifiable product specifications
  • Help validate the design and parameter choices of elastomers, sensors, electronics and firmware, and quantitatively benchmark the performance and durability of key components
  • Operate and maintain the existing R&D testing equipment to a high standard
  • Design and develop new functions and equipment to expand the testing lab capability
  • Lead or take part in research projects to develop and test new cutting edge technologies, and their applications within ROLI products
  • Unleash creativity and come up with innovative solutions to complex challenges
What you’ll need: 
  • A solid electronics engineering background with good mechanical understanding
  • Familiar with electronic design software such as Altium
  • Familiar with CAD software as Solidworks
  • Proven experience in commercial/research projects and with the ability to frame experiments in a systematic and scientific approach
  • Familiar with test sequencing, scripting languages and data analysis tools, such as Labview, MatLab, Minitabs etc 
  • Excellent communication skills and flawless written English
  • An inquisitive mind and demonstrable examples of implementing proactive solutions
  • Superb and demonstrable time-management skills and the ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with team members across many disciplines and at all levels
  • A passion for music, technology and startups
Bonus Points:
  • Postgraduate degree in electronics and/or mechanical engineering
  • Programming skills in C/ C++ for embedded systems 
  • Experience in testing system automation and/or robotic system design
